I was told long time ago these are all for publicity stunts.
Basically get few articles out there Batmobile is up for auction and get buzz around the auction.
The winner is fixed and if someone not affiliated actually wins then they will somehow void it via technicalities.

But then David Copperfield did buy one from an auction thinking it was screen used and sued.
